Programmeur van Doom en Quake geëerd met BAFTA

De British Academy of Film and Television Arts (oftwel, BAFTA) eert programmeur John Carmack met de Fellowship Award tijdens de opkomende British Academy Games Award. De Fellowship Award is het hoogste eerbewijs die BAFTA uitreikt aan individuen voor een uitmuntende en uitzonderlijke bijdrage aan films, televisieshows of games. Andere ontvangers van deze award zijn Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario, Donkey Kong), Will Wright (SimCity, The Sims), Peter Molyneux (Fable) en Gabe Newell (Valve Corporation).

John Carmack is celebrated as a leading voice within computer and game engineering and is one of the pioneers of 3D graphics. For the past two decades, Carmack has driven adoption of many popular techniques that have changed the landscape of gaming, including adaptive tile refresh, raycasting, binary space partitioning and surface caching. He is recognised worldwide as a visionary for the part he played in some of the most popular video game franchises in history.

John Carmack is één van de oprichters van id Software. Hier heeft hij gewerkt als hoofdprogrammeur aan titels als Doom en Quake. Echter verliet Carmack in 2013 id Software om verder te gaan bij Oculus. Over het ontvangen van de BAFTA Fellowship zegt hij het volgende:

Receiving a BAFTA Fellowship is a great honor. Over the course of my career, I've remained passionate about the potential for engineering and technology improvements to expand the range of human creativity. Graphics, networking, extendable platforms, and now virtual reality; each has enabled magnificent new things that delight millions of people. I am as excited about the future today as I was when I started.

Tijdens de BAFTA wordt ook de Game of the Year Award uitgereikt. De genomineerden zijn The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Rocket League, Life is Strange, Fallout 4, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture en Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Welke titel verdient volgens jouw deze award?
