Sony heeft bekendgemaakt dat ze zich aan de afgesproken tien jaar aan levensduur voor de PlayStation 3 zullen houden.
Na het hele gedoe rondom het PlayStation Network is Sony weer lekker op dreef. Het Japanse bedrijf heeft net de vijftig miljoen verkochte units gehaald en lijkt nog lang niet klaar te zijn met haar console. Sterker nog, de afgesproken tien jaar blijkt een minimum te zijn.
Andrew House zegt het volgende hierover:
"I've always said [PS3's life-cycle will be] ten-plus years and the only question mark is how long the 'plus' is," House said, adding that "ten years I think is the minimum."
"What we've said many times before and we're confident about is we launched a device that is very, very powerful, that has a whole range of possibilities and that's at the very least a ten-year life-cycle. I know I'm guilty of repeating myself but I think it's always worth pointing out we're still selling PlayStation 2 in its millions around the world, 11 years after it was launched.
Op de vraag of Microsoft niet te vroeg is met haar nieuwe console zegt Andrew House het volgende:
"I think that's a question for Microsoft to address rather than us."
In ditzelfde interview zei Andrew House dat Sony weet dat cross-game chat een belangrijke functie is, wat de kans dat Sony dit toevoegt aan het PlayStation Network aanzienlijk vergroot.
"We've announced that we've hit a significant milestone with 50 million units sold worldwide, but I really do believe that that's just the start."
Het lijkt er dus op dat Sony haar beloftes waar gaat maken, wat natuurlijk altijd een goede zaak is. Sony is weer helemaal terug op de consolemarkt, en zal harder knokken dan ooit om haar beschadigde reputatie in ere te herstellen.
