Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 draait niet op een nieuwe engine

De nieuwe Call of Duty-deel, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, draait niet op een nieuwe engine. Dit heeft ontwikkelaar Treyarch laten weten. De game draait als sinds Call of Duty: Modern Warfare op de oude Quake 3 Arena id Tech 3 engine.

Als we Dan Bunting, multiplayer director bij Treyarch, mogen geloven hebben ze de nieuwe engine zwaar aangepast voor Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. Zo heeft de ontwikkelaar een nieuw render-techniek toegepast, waardoor de game er grafisch stuk beter uitziet als zijn voorgangers.

Engines are funny things. People used to talk about game engines as if it was a singular product that the game's built on. But engines are really collections of tech that have some very basic, fundamental architecture to them. The core architecture of the game is still based on the technologies that it's been built off of, but most engines in the game industry, for large scale games, have all come from a lineage back to an earlier game engine.

Bunting laat weten dat een nieuwe engine voor Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 onmogelijk was geweest.

Engines these days, especially for games of this kind of scope, are very varied, so that each component of the game has its own engine in a lot of ways. The engine itself, what the people refer to the as the engine, is the technology the studio develops along the way.

Bunting geeft verder nog aan dat de AI-systeem ook op de schop is gegaan. Dit alles moet er toe leiden dat Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 er een stuk beter uit gaat zien op de PlayStation 4 en de Xbox One.
