Moeders geef nooit je creditcard aan een kind van elf

In Groot Brittannië heeft een elfjarige jongen, Brendan Matthews, op Xbox LIVE bijna 1100 Engelse ponden uitgegeven. Dat staat gelijk aan ongeveer 125.000 Microsoft Points. Het geld heeft hij echter niet uit zijn spaarpot gehaald, maar van de creditcard van zijn moeder Dawn Matthews.

Zijn moeder, Dawn Matthews, heeft Microsoft hiervoor verantwoordelijk gesteld. Mevr. Matthews heeft namelijk haar creditcard gegevens aan haar zoon verstrekt omdat hij een een Gold-account abonnement wilde aanschaffen. Microsoft slaat deze gegevens op, zodat de gegevens worden gebruikt voor toekomstige aankopen via Xbox LIVE.

It is ridiculous to allow someone of his age to make payments without any checks being done. When he is in gaming mode he can't be thinking about the money. You can't put all that responsibility on a young boy. It is impossible to monitor everything your children do. These companies should take some responsibility. They take advantage of vulnerable people.
When I showed him (the bill) he burst into tears. He unplugged the Xbox and said he didn't want it any more. I haven't punished him because he feels bad enough and I know he won't do it again.

Microsoft heeft moeders vriendelijk, doch dringend gewezen op het feit dat er Parental Controls op de console staat geïnstalleerd. Daarnaast moet je bij iedere online aankoop je kaart selecteren om de aankoop te bevestigen.
